Tide times are NOAA predictions for Destin, East Pass (station 8729511), next to Crab Island. The best window is a general guide based on the incoming tide. Wind, rain, boat traffic and weather also affect water clarity, so clear water is never guaranteed.
A flood tide is the rising, incoming tide. An ebb tide is the falling, outgoing tide. The prettiest water shows up near the end of the flood tide and for a little while after high tide.
Many beaches get two high tides a day. Destin usually gets one, so timing your trip matters more.
The water typically rises 0.4 to 0.8 feet from low to high tide, and rarely more than about 1 foot.
Days with a stronger incoming tide push more Gulf water over the sandbar. Our planner rates every day.
High tide shifts later each day, moving from morning to afternoon over a week or two. In winter it often falls at night.
Calm mornings are usually the clearest. Strong afternoon wind stirs up sand and makes the water choppy.
Heavy rain sends darker runoff into the bay, which can cloud the water for a day or two.
Busy summer weekends and holidays can stir up the shallows. Weekdays are usually calmer.

Usually from about 2 hours before to 2 hours after high tide, ideally on a day with a strong incoming tide, light wind and no recent heavy rain.
On most days, one high tide and one low tide. A few days each month have two small high tides or none at all.
Not much. At Destin’s East Pass the water usually rises about 0.4 to 0.8 feet from low to high tide and rarely more than about 1 foot. Even that small rise brings clear Gulf water over the sandbar.
Tide predictions come from NOAA’s Destin, East Pass station (8729511), right next to Crab Island.
No. Tides are the biggest factor we can plan around, but wind, rain, boat traffic and weather also affect water clarity on the day of your trip.
Yes. The water is shallower and usually less clear, but it’s still a great place to swim, float and relax.
